In autumn 2008, two RST grants of £70 and £40 were given to Hakeem. His application for mainstream benefits was delayed because UKBA had not issued his National Insurance Number and other essential paperwork. He was being treated for prostate cancer, diabetes and heart disease and, without RST funding, would have been left destitute for three weeks.
